Delivering Safe, Compassionate, and Informed Care

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism (Tier 2).

This training is the government’s preferred and recommended programme for health and social care staff, designed to ensure that everyone receives the high-quality, person-centered care they deserve.

Who is this course for?

Tier 2 is designed for health and social care staff with responsibility for providing direct treatment, care, or support, as well as other professionals who work with a high degree of autonomy.


Overview

The Tier 2 training is a comprehensive, one-day face-to-face workshop. It is uniquely co-delivered by a lead trainer alongside Experts with Lived Experience (an autistic person and a person with a learning disability).

The day is split into two core sessions:

  1. Learning Disability
  2. Understanding the lives and strengths of people with learning disabilities.
  3. Reviewing the LeDeR (Learning from Lives and Deaths) findings.
  4. Practical application of Reasonable Adjustments.
  5. Avoiding "diagnostic overshadowing" to ensure physical health needs aren't missed.
  6. Autism
  7. Understanding autism as an "invisible condition."
  8. Recognising sensory differences and potential triggers for anxiety.
  9. Adapting communication styles and environments.
  10. Implementing legal frameworks like the Equality Act and Mental Capacity Act.

Important Note: To attend this Tier 2 session, all learners must have first completed the Part 1 e-learning module provided by NHS England.
